Moth Trapping Howdon - 2nd Half of April 2016

The second half of April was just as bad as the first.  I started marking the moths with a tiny dot of water based paint (marked same place for all species on each day) to see if I was retrapping any moths but so far none have reappeared in a trap although I did find a Hebrew Character which I trapped on 14 April on a wooden table next to my trap on 21 April in the late afternoon although it was not there the following morning.  I have now stopped marking them, the last was on 20 April which was my first ever Twenty-plume Moth.

The following is what I trapped from 15 - 30 April 2016, wont bother to show comparisons against last year as like most of us they were well down.

Moth Trapping Howdon - First Half of April 2016

April so far has been rather poor according to my records (only 1 year though) and from what others have said especially Tom Tams who has been living in the land of no night although I believe the nighttime sun has now been switched off.  Last year in the first half of the month I trapped 130 moths but this month so far is only 66 which is a 50% drop.  Lets hope the 2nd half of April will fare better.
So here are the results from the Howdon Jury:

Second Half of March 2016

The following are all the moths caught in our Garden for the second half of March. Not a great lot but better than some (but not many), although for the first and probably only time in my life I am in front of Tom Tams due to his EXCESSIVE lights problem. The weather seems to be improving so lets hope the catch does although I have been tinkering (have actually completely devastated it) with the garden and have been helping the chap who lives behind me and started tidying up his. Am getting a few moth friendly plants such as Honeysuckle (Lonicera Periclymenum), Primrose (Primulat Vulgaris), Tobacco Plant (Nicotiana tabacum(wonder if thats where the expression Tabs comes from) and Red Valerian (Centranthus ruber). Have also put down lots of Wildflowers also and will be getting a couple of different Buddleia.

The Light Is On and Is Working (sort of)

The weather has started improving so have had a single trap out for a few nights in the first couple of weeks of March.  The results haven't been spectacular but at least I am getting some.  Here is a summary of what I have caught so far.

Summary for first half of March 2016

Code    Name
            Agonopterix sp.      - Agonopterix species  -  2
73.069 Xylocampa areola - Early Grey  -  3
73.244 Orthosia cerasi      - Common Quaker  -  6
73.249 Orthosia gothica    - Hebrew Character  - 10

Hopefully it will pick up a bit more as Spring seems to be starting.

The first 2 are of the Agonopterix Species although judging from the size they are probably Heracliana but you cant confirm without Gen Det procedure

Bet you cant wait for the end of March for my next report (REALLY)
