Moth Trapping at Howdon in June 2016

The weather got a bit better from about the 2nd week in June so the moths increased and the lists got bigger so the following pictures are new moths for me during June plus a few notable captures and favourite photographs also.

1st June - 70.240  Scalloped Hazel (melanic) -  (Odontopera bidentata f. nigrans)


7th June - 72.022 Muslin Moth - Diaphora mendica


13th June  49.139  Cochylis atricapitana


19th June - 37.099  Coleophora striatipennella


19th June - 71.005 Sallow Kitten Furcula furcula (Had to put two as it is such a spectacular moth)

 This one was taken in lovely sunlight

22nd June - 12.033  Tinea trinotella


23rd June -  70.222 Brown Silver-line Petrophora chlorosata


23rd June - 70.016 Riband Wave [non-banded form] Idaea aversata ab. remuta


23rd June - 73.301 Shoulder-striped Wainscot Leucania comma


25th June -  62.060  Vitula edmandsii (Only my second ever)


25th June - 73.281 The Lychnis Hadena bicruris


26th June - 73.038 Grey Dagger Acronicta psi


30th June - 73.036 Alder Moth Acronicta alni



The following are some of my favourite moths and photographs from the month

Elephant Hawk Moth - absolutely amazing colouring


A Dagger ag, Miller and Iron Prominent who arranged themselves neatly for their say cheese moment


My Robinson trap having a rest during the day


A couple of Poplar Hawk Moths and a Peppered Moth who are normally quite obliging when
taking photographs


Lime Hawk Moth - my favourite Hawk Moth of the 4 I have caught so far


Figure of Eighty - for some reason it always reminds me of the Millenium Falcon


Green Pug - just love the colouring on this


Magpie Moth - only my 2nd ever


Buff Arches - got really close in for this so you can see the delicacy of it and the amazing patterns

  1. Some cracking moths there John. The Poplar Kitten is a stunner. The card makes loads of difference when photographing them !!! What's that card called ? (i've forgotten)

  2. I believe its called Photography Grey Card 18%(as simple as that) You use your PRE setting and take a photograph of it and it sets all colours correct on your camera Just google it on Amazon or Ebay
